چکیده

We explore the presence of torques at the inner edges of geometrically-thin black hole accretion disks using 3-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations in a pseudo-Newtonian potential. By varying the saturation level of the magnetorotational instability that leads to angular momentum transport, we show that the dynamics of gas inside the radius of marginal stability varies depending upon the magnetic field strength just outside that radius. Weak fields are unable to causally connect material within the plunging region to the rest of the disk, and zero torque is an approximately correct boundary condition at the radius of marginal stability. Stronger fields, which we obtain artificially but which may occur physically within more complete disk models, are able to couple at least some parts of the plunging region to the rest of the disk. In this case, angular momentum (and implicitly energy) is extracted from the material in the plunging region. Furthermore, the magnetic coupling to the plunging region can be highly time dependent with large fluctuations in the torque at the radius of marginal stability. This implies varying accretion efficiencies, both across systems and within a given system at different times. The results suggest a possible link between changes in X-ray and outflow activity, with both being driven by transitions between weak and strong field states. Efficiency of Magnetized Thin Accretion Disks in the Kerr Metric

The efficiency of thin disk accretion onto black holes depends on the inner boundary condition, specifically the torque applied to the disk at the last stable orbit. This is usually assumed to vanish. I estimate the torque on a magnetized disk using a steady magnetohydrodynamic inflow model originally developed by Takahashi et al. 1990. I find that the efficiency ǫ can depart significantly from...

Accretion Disk Torqued by a Black Hole

If a Kerr black hole is connected to a disk rotating around it by a magnetic field, the rotational energy of the Kerr black hole provides an energy source for the radiation of the disk in addition to disk accretion. The black hole exerts a torque on the disk, which transfers energy and angular momentum between the black hole and the disk. If the black hole rotates faster than the disk, energy a...

Magnetohydrodynamic Simulations of Black Hole Accretion

We discuss the results of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations, using a pseudo-Newtonian potential, of thin disk (h/r ≈ 0.1) accretion onto black holes. We find (i) that magnetic stresses persist within rms, the marginally stable orbit, and (ii) that the importance of those stresses for the dynamics of the flow depends upon the strength of magnetic fields in the disk outside rms. S...

Magnetic Stress at the Marginally Stable Orbit: Altered Disk Structure, Radiation, and Black Hole Spin Evolution

Magnetic connections to the plunging region can exert stresses on the inner edge of an accretion disk around a black hole. We recompute the relativistic corrections to the thin-disk dynamics equations when these stresses take the form of a time-steady torque on the inner edge of the disk. The additional dissipation associated with these stresses is concentrated relatively close outside the marg...

Extracting Energy from Accretion into a Kerr Black Hole.

The highest efficiency of converting rest mass into energy by accreting matter into a Kerr black hole is approximately 31% (Thorne 1974). We propose a new process in which periods of accretion from a thin disk, and the associated spin-up of the black hole, alternate with the periods of no accretion and magnetic transfer of energy from the black hole to the disk. These cycles can repeat indefini...

Hyper-accreting Black Holes and Gamma-ray Bursts

A variety of current models for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) suggest a common engine a black hole of several solar masses accreting matter from a disk at a rate 0.01 to 10 M ⊙ s. Using a numerical model for relativistic disk accretion, we have studied steady-state accretion at these high rates. Outside about 10 cm, the disk is advection dominated; energy released by dissipation is carried in by the ...
